sea of cortez - bahia de los angeles (los angeles bay)

Postby dhines » Tue Sep 29, 2009 4:38 pm

i will be diving down to bahia de los angeles on sunday october 11. we will be spending a week down there and hopefully hitting many spots between puetrecitos and LA bay. has anyone fished down there before? i have heard much advice about what artificial lures to use, but i am wondering . . . don't folks also use live bait?

any input would be much appreciated.

btw, i am not fishing for any particular type of fish, just looking to have a good time and land as many fish as possible.

thanks,
dhines

Camped on the beach and partied at El Golfo (Golfo De Sta Claire) a couple times, but never fished down that way. Looking forward to eharing about it when you get back though.

I've fished in rocky point before using cut up fish for bait. It worked really well to catch triggerfish and rock bass.

It's a little over an hour farther down the sea of cortez past El Golfo.

In LA Bay, take a bunch of heavy UFO or Salax jigs in scrambled egg, chrome, or blue and white. Use a high speed reel and 40 pound test. Ask around where to fish for yellowtails, drop it down till it hits bottom. Crank as fast as you can for about 40 cranks, repeat. In the Gonzaga Bay area, take a flipping stick with 20lb test and some rattletraps, cast along rocky shorelines. Have fun!

Here are some pictures so you can see the type of fish we were catching. The first one is a triggerfish. It reminds me of a 3-5lb bluegill with huge teeth. They put up a big fight for their size. The next one they call a rock bass.

Love that picture... the seagull coming in to land in the background had to be a lucky shot, but it adds affect.

Doug.... maybe you can get some squid and get some lead heads.....use some dri ice to keep it, and then reg. ice when you get there.... I have not fished the area your talking about... but the jigs mentioned are good, and some rapala tolling lures..... watch out with the drive my friend.... day light hours are the best... from what I've heard...

good luck with the trip....

We used to go to El Golfo 2-3 times a year and catch everything in the world. I can't go anymore for a variety of reasons. I love reading about trips like this. Thanks for posting.

Blind Squirrel: to reflect the reality of most of our fishing lives wrote:Some salt-water anglers go fishing without knowing when high tide or low tide occurs. A few fishermen seem to act as if tides make little or no difference in salt-water fishing. Those anglers may spend many hours fishing at less than ideal times when they could concentrate their efforts on the best tidal periods and catch more fish in less time. Of course one must understand that fishing is a pass time upon which success is not predicated purely on numbers and perfection of performance. An angler usually would like to catch fish, but often one must fish when one can rather than castrate that experience from one's life if they can't always fish at the perfect time or in the perfect place. Unlike the opinion of some, fishing is to be experienced in its entirety, and any bit of gear available and time spent no matter how many or how few fish are caught can be rewarding. A true challenge is not being able to catch fish when fishing is good, but rather to be able to catch fish whenever you have the opportunity to go fishing.

Do you need a license to fish from shore in these places? If so, where do you get one?
A day on the river just drifting and pitching, canoe style... could there be a better way.

Biggest Bass - How I Caught It: 24" bass, caught near the Laguna Dam one afternoon in Spring. Didn't have a weight scale, but it was around 9-10 pounds. Caught it on a spinning rod and reel, with a Panther Martin swim bait.
